Affiliate Money On YouTube

Welcome back to my podcast Anyone Can Make Money On Youtube. This is episode #5 Affiliate Money On YouTube. I’m Kim and todays episode is all about Affiliate work and how of the $90,000 I made last year $67,000 of it came from Affiliate Marketing.

It’s apparent that most people and even current YouTubers do not understand the possible ways to leverage their platform before they become large enough for ads on their videos.

It’s true! So many small creators keep thinking to themselves I just need to get 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch hours and then I will make money. The honest fact is that before you even have a Youtube channel you can be an affiliate. Although, anyone can sign up, having a channel and making content on things that people are interested in will drive the conversion.

EPISODE #5 Affiliate Money On YouTube

Therefore, today we will dive into the major affiliate programs I participated in before I was even big enough to be a Youtube Partner receiving AdSense revenue.

My goal in this episode is to make it clear that you should not wait for AdSense to begin in order to make money on YouTube, start an affiliate program today.

Quick personal plug: if you are enjoying this podcast please leave some Review Stars, 5 stars are always nice and a kind review, this goes so far in helping this podcast be found by others who are interested in what I am sharing, so thank you I appreciate you taking your time.

Also my channel, social media handles and all the equipment I use on Youtube and this podcast, are linked in the description of this podcast and over on my website www.naturalkaos.com remember kaos is spelled K A O S.

In my previous episode “The Money” I touched on the 8 different methods of monetization on Youtube. Many of those income streams have requirements or frankly won’t work unless you have an audience. But what if you have 200 subscribers, do you think you can make money on Youtube with 200 Subscribers? I promise you can, because I did:)

In case you are not aware I have a 3 part series on my Youtube Channel Natural Kaos, covering these topics. They have graphs and images so if you are a visual learner like me a more visual option is available. I know you all listen to this in your car… at least I think you do, that’s where I listen to podcasts which is why I know listening to a concept and then seeing it later is a great way to absorb information. When you are home from dropping the kids off or back from your job, you can check that 3 part series out.

So how did I make the other $67,000? It was actually very simple and in the beginning totally surprising. I am going to be honest, when I started out I did not have a grand plan on how I was going to make Youtube a business. Initially I thought I will make Young Living videos and then maybe that will help my Young Living business grow.

Nope that doesn’t work, want to know why? Because people searching for Young Living videos are already members, thus they are not going to buy a starter kit from me.

Consequently, I realized my essential oil videos would not have the impact on my Young Living business I had originally hoped for, but I reconciled myself to the fact that I could make these videos to help my team and spread Young Living inspiration and hopefully even though the young living audience would not buy from me, they would presumably become subscribers, and if by chance I ever got ads turned on, they would watch the commercials and I would make some passive income.

I started my channel in June of 2018. But my understanding of affiliate marketing never took shape until that fall, 4 months after my first video launched. Such a huge lost opportunity which is why I am sharing this with you, don’t sell yourself short when you are a small creator.

My TCA peel video aired that October, and it was more than just a polarizing video, it opened my eyes to the possibilities to affiliate marketing, specifically Amazon Associates.

I am a huge Amazon user, I buy almost everything from Amazon so of course most of my skincare products come from Amazon, including my TCA peel solution. When I was creating this video, my sister Kristi actually told me to get an Amazon Associates account. She said anyone could have one and then you just link to items you are using and sharing. She had one at the time but didn’t know everything about it because she had only made a couple $100 from sending links to friends. She wasn’t familiar with having links on Youtube attached to a video that was getting a lot of attention and what that could possibly represent in revenue.

Consequently, my expectation for money from Amazon Associates was very low. I thought, perhaps I will make back the $20 I spent on the acid for making this video. This was my thought, but I truly didn’t think anyone would click my link to buy the acid.

When you join Amazon Associates and are added as an Affiliate you get a back office that is called Site Stripe it allows you to see clicks, purchases and any money you have earned plus it allows you to build these special links. If you do not make 1 sale within in 180 days Amazon will close your account. You can at this point re-apply but basically they do this to clean up a majority of inactive or ineffective accounts across their platform.

I saw this closure warning as I enrolled into the Amazon Associates program and literally thought I bet I will be reapplying in the future. I launched my TCA acid video, stuck the special link in this video and basically forgot about it. I didn’t have much faith in the links being clicked so I wasn’t paying attention to the Amazon back office. 60 days later we were in Greece and I thought I should check on my Amazon Associates account, in my mind I thought I was closer to the cut off period that I actually was and wanted to see if I even still had an account.

When I logged in I was blown away. From October 30- November 30 2018, I had made $79 with Amazon with 1400 clicks and 54 items ordered. I was speechless. Keep in mind when I launched the TCA video I had around 170 subscribers. By the end of November I had 670 subscribers, so still not monetized by Youtube, but I had just made $80.

I know what you are thinking, $80 bucks, I can’t even buy groceries for the week. I know, I know, with these types of businesses you have to be patient but not stagnant. What I mean by this, is once you get this engine going it may seem lack luster at first, but it’s seriously the tip of what’s coming. If you don’t see any movement or any type of growth at all for months you need to sit down and seriously re-asses what you are doing, but if you are gaining views, subscribers, and you are seeing clicks through to Amazon or any other program you joined, then you are on the right track.

Trust me it gets better than $80 per month. A month later when I checked my report in the Amazon back office I had made $610 that December with almost 10,000 clicks and at this point I had 2000 subscribers. The two polarizing videos I had launched that fall were almost 100% responsible for this growth and driving clicks to Amazon.

Seriously, I couldn’t believe it I was shocked that in just 2 months I had added Amazon Associates and my channel was making money. I wish I had added this feature the first day I launched my first video which is why I share this with you. I don’t want your dream of being a successful creator to fall flat because you don’t know how to survive as you build.

This January 2020, I just checked my Amazon Associates account, I am on pace to make over $6,000 this month, just from Amazon. To put into perspective patience and growth, last January 2019 I made $895 from Amazon, 12 months later I am going to make over 6 times the amount I did the previously year. Again, and I always feel like I need to mention this, I do not share this nitty gritty money topic to be self indulgent or brag, its quite the opposite, I share it so you have the ability to build a life changing business. I have no idea how to forecast my 2020 year at this point, but with January notoriously known as the slow month on Youtube and with global sales, all I can say is I am very excited to see how I close this new year out.

In the year of 2019, I made over $24,000 with Amazon Associates. This money was incredible and it was an unexpected gift for my family as we all sacrificed in 2019 to build this channel.

We are going to go over other affiliate programs that made me money in 2019 but first I want to share some more aspects about Amazon Associates that I think you should be aware of.

First there is a difference between Amazon Associates and Amazon Influencer.

Initially, I was an Amazon Associate but then in early 2019 I realized there was an Influencer option where the Influencer could have a actual page on Amazon with subcategories on items and this single link basically took the user to everything the influencer used. This is awesome because instead of having a million links, I can simply link to my Amazon Influencer page and then the user can shop the different categories and topics Ive created.

It is easier to be an Amazon Associate than an Amazon Influencer. I am not clear on the Influencer base requirements for entry. I know my sister applied who had the Amazon Associates account and had 1000 followers on Instagram and she was denied for the Influencer program. So with this in mind it won’t be open to most small creators at first unless you have a social media platform that is already larger, and again I don’t know how big it needs to be.

Amazon currently offers Influencer pages in The US, The UK and The Canadian Market’s. Each market has to be applied for, built out and maintained individually. This is a lot of work but again its how you make money on Youtube. I have the Influencer page for all 3 that are currently available to me and hope top join Influencer pages for the other markets that Amazon has.

My audience is worldwide which means if I use a product from The Amazon US store, that link is only good for US shoppers. It does not serve someone who lives in Australia. So with this in mind I have Amazon Associates with the rest of the markets in the world. This includes, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Australia and then Influencer pages with The US, UK and Canada. So when I link to something in a video, I try to find links for that product in all the countries I am an Amazon Associate with. There are a few markets that I’m not set up with yet, but I plan to complete all options in 2020, like Brazil and Japan.

The reason Amazon can be so lucrative is because it is such a huge shopping platform with lots of shopping options. I may link to TCA acid but I will make a percentage, 4%-10% on everything that person buys or adds to a cart during that 24 hour period since they clicked my special link. If they add it to their cart during this 24 hour period I get credit for these items as long as they complete their check out in the next 89 days.

If you make a ton of videos, that are always referencing something you picked up from Amazon and then people go to look at it, the chances being compensated for sending them there are great, because the more clicks you get everyday the greater your odds. On top of this, if you make evergreen content that is always being watched and searched then you can have 500 videos up on Youtube all making you money because of the traffic you drive to e-commerce.

Another thing you need to be sure of is your affiliate link disclaimer. Amazon is very specific on what they want included in your video description when you add a link. The FTC also wants a disclaimer. In every single one of my videos I have a blurb in the description which states:

Natural Kaos is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.

Many links are affiliate links, meaning I am compensated when you shop through these, at no extra fee to you. These help me spend as much time as possible dedicated to making content on Youtube:) thank you for choosing my link:) kim

Disclosing that something is a Ad or that a compensates you for sharing is required of social media influencers, no matter the platform. The point is to inform an audience that if they click a link the influencer may benefit financially. I think this is good to inform people of this fact because many times an audience wants to support their favorite online person and if they are going to buy something anyways they might as well benefit that person for sharing about that product. Second, I think this transparency is very helpful for everyone involved because the last thing I would ever want is for someone who values my opinion to feel like I was taking advantage of them in some way.

Youtube videos and all of these links become an incredible compounding effect which is why a year later after making $895 in January 2019, I will make over $6000 this January 2020. This is why you can’t wait to start and this is why you need to be patient but on the correct course. Only you can define your topic and your audience, and further only your personality will be the one to resonate or not, so keep in mind there are factors here you may not be able to overcome, however, even the most quarky personalities make it on YouTube, you just have to be persistent on good topics, giving value and always being yourself.

Besides Amazon there are so many affiliate programs that you can join as a new small channel.

EBAY Partner Network is one I used this past year, its similar to Amazon but I find it doesn't do as well because most people feel more confident in ordering from Amazon and the listings on EBAY constantly expire or break, so this becomes a big management issue and I’m only alerted when something is broken based on someones comment, otherwise its impossible for me to stay on top of it all. And I know I miss out on revenue because of these broken links and this problematic system but overall its still financially viable and in 2019 I made $8,530 with EBAY Partner Network.

If you google affiliate marketing program’s you will see so many pop up. Many brands you may want to work with directly use these third party platforms to run their affiliate programs. These third party platforms will detail the commission rate, the time the cookie is good for which on everything outside of Amazon’s 24 hour window typically appears to be 30 days, and then you will set up direct deposit with these sites so you can be paid monthly. Most of these programs pay monthly and have lead times. For instance Amazon pays 60 days after the pay period in question and they only do direct deposit, check, or Amazon gift card based on meeting the payout thresholds. Which is $10 earned to get direct deposit or Amazon gift card and $100 if you want a mailed check. If you do not meet the threshold then it just compiles from month to month until you do.

Outside of Amazon and Ebay I was an Affiliate with Jifu Travel, again anyone can be an affiliate with Jifu. You need to become a member so you can have access to the travel portal, then you can book to save on your next adventures, share what you saved and all about your trip and then when people join because of you sharing you benefit. In 2019 I made $19,500 with Jifu Travel, which was incredible because I was able to basically pay for a majority of our travel with these commission checks plus get the best rates possible because of their booking engine that cuts out all the middle fees that company like Expedia and Priceline like to add in. Jifu is a subscription based service so its monthly and you continue to earn as the people you brought in continue to pay for this travel service.

The final $10,000 I made this year came from little affiliations that I did with specific videos that perhaps linked back directly to that brand and those videos are still live today and still continue to make money even if its on the smaller side. All of it adds up and compounds into one large annual income.

I like affiliate work because I feel like its very honest and transparent. If I like something and I choose to make a video sharing about it and that causes someone to want to try it for themselves and then they buy, it’s a win for me and a win for the brand. Many influencers do not like Affiliate work because they only get paid if their is a true conversion, Influencers who don’t trust their audience or feel that something won’t convert well will not do affiliate marketing but instead will only do sponsored posts, this is because they want to be paid weather or not they actually make money for the brand they are working with. I feel this scenario will continue to change to more results based marketing for influencers as many brands have been burned by fake accounts and no ROI.

As a small creator you should try and standout by always serving your subscribers first with good content on topics they are interested in. If a product fits both needs and gives value then this is the best way to monetize your channel in a very authentic and rewarding way. Dont just join affiliations and post a million links to hopefully capture sales. Everything you do should be checked against a sounding board on does this make sense for you, does it make sense for your audience and do you really want to share about it?

One of my best performing videos, is one I decided to randomly film all about the Ordinary’s Peeling Solution product. It was inline with my audience and channel and I had bought it with the purpose of testing it out. I made this video not thinking it would do very well, I thought people would enjoy it but I didn’t have high expectations. After it was ups for about 3 months and doing very well, I received a email from a representative for the brand saying they loved my video and could they send me more products. This started our conversation and they invited me into their affiliate program. Now they send me anything new or anything I am interested in trying out or need refills on and its become a great relationship. I share this story with you because as a small creator you cannot just message a ton of brands thinking they want to work with you, why would they? You have not shown any value.

Your job as a small creator is to create a portfolio of content, showing your conversion, meaning how many clicks do you get and of those how many people actually buy. You need to show your style and more than anything show that you are a professional so brands take you seriously and want to work with you. They will come as you work hard growing your base, your niche, and developing your art form which is video making.

Focusing on the mentality, if I build it they will come, is how I made $67,000 in 2019 with affiliate marketing.

Creating a channel like mine and making it as lucrative as it has become requires insane sacrifice and not just on me as the creator, but sacrifice by my husband Jason and our four little boys; everyone feels the sacrifice of entrepreneurship.

Being an entrepreneur is not easy, its the most difficult job to do because no one is going to have deadlines for you, no one is going to help motivate you, and no one is going to praise you. The most difficult aspect for me as I build this channel is trying to explain to others why I chose to be a YouTube creator, it’s a taboo subject and people think you are narcissistic and judge you harshly for sharing aspects of your life. I am not even talking about “the trolls” on YouTube, Im talking about people in your regular life who know you, even family members will judge you.

Family members will presume, that you making YouTube videos is not healthy for you and your family because of the demand or how self absorbed you seem. This is crazy to me because if tomorrow I decided to go to medical school and I needed to take on $500,000 of debt, and for the next 5 years be 100% focused on medicine, no one would criticize me for this choice. They would instead view it as mother empowerment, altruistic even, in the fact that I want to help others and further, impressive that I am an example to my boys for further education after marriage and baby raising.

Why is going to medical school at my age more impressive than launching an actual business that does not put my family in half a million dollars of debt? but instead provides opportunity, like more family adventures all over the world, or the ability to save money and be more financially sound, or even be able to give back more to society?

The YouTube predicament is one reason I felt compelled to create this podcast. Of course I wanted to give insight into how I made money with a small channel, but I think I needed the ability to take this time and assess what just happened in 2019. This has been therapeutic for me because I have felt desperate this past year to explain that my channel is more than me just being narcissistic in front a camera. No one sees YouTuber's as entrepreneurs. This has to do with society being in the dark and not understanding the business of Youtube. If YouTuber's never share their business why would anyone look at Youtube as a business? I hope to change this mentality.

Therefore, not only do I hope this podcast helps you launch and a build a lucrative channel that makes your dreams come true, but I hope together we can reshape the perception that people have of Youtube and YouTuber's.

Professional YouTuber's need to be given the same respect and appreciation that any profession receives in society. Lawyers, Doctors, Construction Workers, Teachers, Policemen and other Entrepreneurs need to understand that Youtube provides just as much value to society as any other workforce and I believe this is an industry that is just starting to take shape.

My YouTube journey should be appreciated and acclaimed not because it has yielded money, which is always a nice measure, but financial gain is not the only indicator of success. My greatest success from this year is that my children all want to be entrepreneurs, they don’t view being Doctor’s or Fireman as a desirable career. They view being creative problem solvers as their goal. I am a 100% out of the box thinker, this has not always served me well, but finally I found a place that rewards me for the skills and value I can add to society and I will be forever grateful.

In the next Episode we go over my disruptive video choices and how they got me strikes from Youtube, Pharmaceutical companies angry, and CBS The Doctors inviting me on their show only to attack me publicly and slander my person.

Join me for Episode 6 BIG BULLIES OF YOUTUBE xoxo Kim
