AHA /BHA + Microneedling Texture Reset Routine
If you’re looking to improve texture, dullness, and fine lines, this Wednesday Skincare Live routine walks through how I occasionally pair chemical exfoliation with microneedling — and, more importantly, how I support my skin barrier afterward.
This is not something I do weekly. Timing, skin condition, and recovery all matter.
.
Why Pair AHA/BHA with Microneedling?
In this routine, I use The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution prior to microneedling with the Dr. Pen M8S using a 36-pin cartridge.
The reasoning:
- Chemical exfoliation helps remove surface buildup and dead skin cells.
- Microneedling stimulates collagen production beneath the surface.
- When spaced and timed properly, this combination can support smoother texture and better product penetration.
This pairing is intended to target:
- Rough texture
- Dullness
- Fine lines
- Uneven tone
However, this approach requires caution. Strong exfoliation plus needling can easily compromise the barrier if done too frequently or too aggressively.
MY LINE UP

.
When to Exfoliate vs. When to Microneedle
These treatments do different jobs.
Exfoliation (AHA/BHA):
- Works on the surface.
- Helps clear pores and smooth texture.
- Best when skin feels congested or dull.

Microneedling:
- Works below the surface.
- Stimulates collagen production.
- Targets fine lines and overall firmness.

I only combine them occasionally and make sure my skin is healthy, calm, and not irritated beforehand. If your barrier feels compromised, skip the exfoliation step.
.
Cartridge Choice: 36-Pin vs Nano vs 12-Pin
The cartridge you choose changes the outcome.
36-Pin Cartridge
- Great for overall texture refinement.
- Covers more surface area.
- Ideal for glow-focused treatments.

12-Pin Cartridge
- More targeted collagen stimulation.
- Often used for deeper lines or acne scarring.

Nano Cartridge
- Very superficial.
- Used for product infusion and minimal downtime.

For this routine, the 36-pin provides a balanced, texture-reset focus without going overly aggressive.
.
Depth Considerations
Depth always depends on area and tolerance.
- Forehead: shallower depth
- Cheeks: moderate depth
- Around delicate areas: reduced depth
Consistency and control matter more than going deep. Aggression does not equal better results.

Post-Treatment Recovery: Snail Mucin & Barrier Support
After microneedling, hydration and barrier repair are everything.
I use COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence for post-treatment recovery because:
- It supports hydration.
- It helps calm the skin.
- It layers well without heaviness.

The goal is to nourish, not overwhelm.
For the next several days:
- No retinoids
- No additional acids
- Strict SPF
- Gentle cleanser only
Barrier recovery determines long-term results.
