Every year, my family spends a week houseboating on Lake Powell, and it has become one of our favorite family traditions. We look forward to the beautiful canyon views, wake surfing, jet skiing, cooking together, watching sunsets and spending uninterrupted time with our extended family.
But our Lake Powell trip in 2026 felt different before we even arrived.

We had seen the videos, Instagram Reels and news reports showing how low the water level had become. We had heard about closed ramps, newly exposed rocks and changing access at the marinas.
Still, we wanted to see the current Lake Powell conditions for ourselves.
After spending a full week houseboating on Lake Powell, I can honestly say that some things have changed dramatically. At the same time, Lake Powell is still just as beautiful and enjoyable as our family remembers.

Watch Our Lake Powell 2026 Houseboat Vacation
In the video below, I take you along for our entire Lake Powell vacation. You’ll see the current conditions at Antelope Point Marina, the low launch ramps, newly exposed boating hazards, Face Canyon, our family traditions, Fourth of July fireworks and everything we experienced during the week.
Arriving at Lake Powell in 2026
Before arriving at Lake Powell, we made several of our traditional road-trip stops.
Because we visit over the Fourth of July, we stopped near Moapa Valley, north of Las Vegas, to purchase the aerial fireworks for our annual show. Coming from California, seeing so many aerial fireworks in one place is always exciting for our family.
We also stopped at Costco in St. George to stock the houseboat with meat, snacks and other supplies. We arrange for some groceries to be delivered, but we still like choosing many of our own groceries before reaching the marina.
These little traditions are part of what makes the Lake Powell trip feel special every year.

When we finally reached Antelope Point Marina, one of the first things we noticed was the crowd.
Despite all the concern surrounding Lake Powell’s low water level, the parking lot was more crowded than we had ever seen it. The low water conditions definitely did not keep visitors away during the Fourth of July holiday.
The Antelope Point Marina Ramp No Longer Reaches the Water
The biggest difference was immediately visible at Antelope Point Marina.
The original walking ramp no longer reaches the lake. Visitors currently need to use the marina’s cart service to travel between the upper marina area and the docks.
The boat launch situation has also changed.
Depending on the size of the boat and the current conditions, smaller watercraft may still be able to launch from Antelope Point. We were able to launch our jet skis there, but our larger ski boat needed to be launched at the Stateline area near Wahweap.
This added another step to the beginning of our vacation, but it did not prevent us from getting our boats and equipment onto the lake.

During our visit, we were told the lake was dropping by approximately two inches per day. That was a major contrast to previous visits when we had watched Lake Powell rise quickly during the summer.
The changing water level makes it especially important to check current marina and launch ramp conditions shortly before your trip.
Does Lake Powell Look Empty in 2026?
Surprisingly, Lake Powell does not feel empty once you are out on the water.
That may have been the biggest surprise of our trip.
Lake Powell is surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs and deep canyons. Unlike a traditional lake with a visible tree line, the water level changes can be difficult to recognize if you have never visited before.
A first-time visitor could easily arrive in 2026 and still be completely amazed by the size and beauty of the lake.

Because our family has visited Lake Powell for decades, we could see the differences.
Some passages that were previously open were now completely closed. Certain rock formations extended much farther into the water, creating narrower boating channels. We also saw newly exposed rocks that we had never noticed during previous trips.
The lake is still enormous, but returning visitors will recognize how much the landscape and navigation routes have changed.
New Rocks and Narrower Boating Channels
The low water level has created new boating hazards throughout Lake Powell.
As we traveled from Antelope Point Marina toward Face Canyon, we noticed that several familiar channels had become much narrower. In some places, rock formations that were once separated by water were now completely connected.
Instead of traveling through those areas, we had to go around them.
We also encountered rocks close to the surface in places where we had not seen them during previous years. Some were clearly visible above the water, while others were more difficult to spot.

Our family used the Lake Genius app during the trip. It allows members of the Lake Powell boating community to mark hazards, beaches, canyons and other useful locations.
Because the lake changes so frequently, current navigation information is incredibly important. Anyone boating on Lake Powell should move carefully, watch for exposed rocks and use updated lake maps or navigation tools.
Finding Our Houseboat Location in Face Canyon
After cruising up the lake, we entered Face Canyon and found a protected place to anchor the houseboat.
The location was surrounded by rock outcroppings that helped shield us from the wakes created by passing boats. We also had plenty of space for swimming, jumping from the rocks and using our water equipment.

Anchoring procedures at Lake Powell have also changed in recent years. Visitors are no longer allowed to drill or place anchor pins directly into the sandstone rock.
Instead, we used large water-filled anchor bags to secure the houseboat.

Once the boat was safely anchored, our vacation officially began.
Our Favorite Lake Powell Family Traditions
Although the water level looked different, the heart of our family vacation remained exactly the same.
Our first night included one of our favorite traditions: hibachi night. My sister prepared a full Benihana-style dinner with homemade sauces for the entire family.
Throughout the week, we cooked cream of wheat pancakes, homemade cookies, pasta and individual pizzas using my dad’s portable pizza oven.
We even brought our ice cream machine onto the houseboat.

The meals take a lot of planning, but cooking and eating together has become one of the most memorable parts of our Lake Powell trips.
Of course, most of our days were spent on the water.
We went wake surfing, wakeboarding, swimming and jet skiing. We inflated water toys, watched Formula 1 on the houseboat and spent time enjoying the scenery around Face Canyon.

Our Fourth of July Fireworks Show
One of the highlights of our annual Lake Powell trip is the Fourth of July fireworks show.
The boys set up the fireworks along the shoreline, and once the canyon became completely dark, we watched the aerial fireworks light up the sky and reflect across the water.

The red rock canyon walls make the fireworks feel even more dramatic. The sound echoes through the canyon, creating an experience that is completely different from watching fireworks at home.
It is one of the traditions our family looks forward to every year.
An Unexpected Trip to the Emergency Room
Not everything during the week went according to plan.
My son Miles developed significant abdominal pain after a wakeboarding crash. Because we were far from medical care and did not know whether the pain was related to the crash, we decided to leave the lake and take him to the emergency room.
Thankfully, he did not require surgery and was ultimately okay.
When you are staying on a houseboat several hours away from a marina, even a simple medical concern can become more complicated. We were grateful we made the decision to have him evaluated and even more grateful that it was not a serious injury.

Was Lake Powell More Crowded Because of the Low Water?
Lake Powell felt extremely crowded during our trip.
The Antelope Point parking lot was packed, and Face Canyon had more boats than we remembered seeing during previous Fourth of July trips.
It is possible that the lower water level is concentrating visitors into fewer accessible boating areas and beaches. However, the holiday weekend was also extremely popular, and it was clear that people were not staying away because of the water level.
Anyone visiting during a busy summer weekend should arrive prepared for crowded marinas, busy launch areas and more competition for desirable houseboat locations.
Is Lake Powell Still Worth Visiting in 2026?
After spending a full week houseboating on Lake Powell, my answer is yes.
Lake Powell is absolutely still worth visiting in 2026.
The water is lower. Some ramps are more difficult to access. Familiar boating channels have changed, and visitors must be more cautious about newly exposed rocks and navigation hazards.
However, Lake Powell remains one of the most beautiful vacation destinations in the American Southwest.

If this were your first visit, you would probably still be amazed by the enormous canyons, blue water and dramatic red rock scenery.
Returning visitors may notice more changes, but the activities that make Lake Powell special are still possible. You can still houseboat, wake surf, swim, explore canyons, cook with your family and watch incredible sunsets.
For our family, the water level did not take away from the experience.
The lake looked different, but the memories were just as meaningful.
Planning a Lake Powell Houseboat Vacation
Our houseboat is privately owned by several partners and is not available to rent.
However, visitors interested in planning a Lake Powell houseboat vacation can contact Antelope Point Marina or other Lake Powell houseboat rental providers to learn about available boats, marina access and current rental options.
Before traveling, check the latest information about:
- Marina access
- Boat launch availability
- Lake elevation
- Fuel availability
- Navigation hazards
- Houseboat anchoring rules
- Weather conditions
- Emergency services
Conditions can change quickly, so information from a previous summer—or even a previous month—may no longer be accurate.
Another Unforgettable Week at Lake Powell
At the end of the week, we packed the houseboat, released our anchor lines and began the trip back to Antelope Point Marina.
Despite the lower water level, changing boating routes and an unexpected visit to the emergency room, it was another unforgettable week at Lake Powell.
We cooked together, played on the water, watched fireworks, laughed with our family and continued a tradition that means so much to all of us.
